:-) #thumbsup! Using the 'template' approach for this, I have to have (as plotaroute admin suggested) one 2-point route present, before I can add the annotations for my summits.

Already done - 233 annotations added - look at the route I made public to see how it looks!

You can import waypoints from a GPX file, as long as it also contains a track and the waypoints are within 100m of a trackpoint.
The following is an example:

I'm not familiar enough with plotaroute yet to understand how waypoints work, so apologies if I misunderstand. Last night I just finished adding 117 Sim summits as annotations, and a further additional 116 Wainwright tops (sore mouse arm at the end!) - 233 in total. Even if Premium there are only a max of 30 waypoints.
So here's the use-case in a little more detail. I want to walk all the Simms - obviously over multiple routes. But in plotting routes for these I want to also be aware of nearby Wainwrights so that if some are nearby a Simm, I can take a short detour to bag one, rather than having to come back on a separate trip to walk up alot of the same mountain to bag a near-to-a-Simm peak. Of course key to this is being able to visually distinguish a Simm from a Wainwright from <any other type of hill / POI>.
I made my list public at https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1799075?units=km - hopefully that will enable you to see what I'm driving at. In this case I've distinguished between a Simm and a Wainwright by using different label colours and label position to the symbol.
I also want to know what peaks I've already walked, so that I don't re-walk them! So for these I've changed the symbol and symbol background colour (and yes there are only 3, but having walked up nearly all the peaks over 30 odd years, my plan is to try and bag all Simms in 2022 - only 3 so far).
The map looks messy when viewed in total. But when you zoom into a scale over which you'd walk, everything resolves itself nicely.
Note - I'm following the 'template' suggestion made by plotaroute admin below.

Plotaroute already export annotations to waypoints when export to gpx.

Just an update:
I use Hill-bagging.co.uk. I can generate list of mountain peaks (eg., Simms for the Lake District, of which there are 117).
For each mountain in the list I:
- copy into my clipboard the mountain name (eg., Scafell Pike) and Grid Ref (eg., NY 21541 07216).
- In Plotaroute, I paste the Grid Ref into the "Locate Map" box, and click whats found. This locates the mountain.
- I then Annotate the map with a label containing the mountain name, and place this at the point found in the step above.
This is easy to do, though extremely labour intensive. Given that this is such an obvious need for list-tickers / hill baggers, etc, could I suggest that you consider adding a function to automate this import - I'm guessing something like Plotaroute's "upload a route", but is maybe "upload an annotation". If you do consider adding this, please note the following: Us hill-baggers like to work through several different lists of peaks. A way to visually distinguish the Simms from the Wainwrights from the .... (you get the idea). I'm going to use a different symbol for each list (i guess a different colour could also be used). But the important point is that in any automatic importer you'd need a field, in addition to mountain name and grid ref, for the icon/colour to use.

These best thing I can suggest Dave is to create a route that you can use a a template (you only need to plot 2 points) and to add all your summits as symbols on the map. Then when you wnat to create a new route you can edit this one and select "Save as new route" when you come to save it, so that you don't overwrite your template route. You would need to add each of the summits individually though, as we have no way of doing a bulk import.

Many thanks for your reply, and that pointer about entering coords.
But I have 117 summits in the lake district, for which I have all the coords. Ideally, I'd like to be able to display all of these in a oner as distinct 'points(waymarks?)' in plotaroute. Once those are in and visible, I can then use plotaroute to plan various different walking routes among all these points (ie., maybe a couple of dozen routes in among all 117 peaks). I either need these as waymarks to be intergrated in the various planned walks, or could they be shown in an unmodifiable map layer to act as a visual reference when I'm planning routes?

Hi Dave,
You can enter map coordindates in the Locate Map box search field in the route planner in the following format:
56.796526,-5.003529
If you plot a point here and then search for the next set if coordinates, you'll be able to plot another point to get a suggested route between them (assuming you have the Auto-Plot switch turned on).
