Browns River "bike Portage"

This is a 300 meter section of trail that joins the lower Browns river logging road to a spur road in the upper network of logging roads south of the Strathcona Parkway (ski hill road). It's takes about 15 or 20 minutes and requires the strength to hike uphill with your bike over your shoulder for brief stretches.

Wet foliage along the narrow trail will soak you even if it isn't actively raining. The upper and lower entrances to the trail are marked with log arrows and cairns, and the trial is flagged as of 2025. The trail isn't exposed.

It's such a downhill shot from the ski hill, using this route, that I've wondered if it couldn't be incorporated into a fun "ski out" of sorts after a day of mountain biking at Mt. Washington. Whoever draws shortest straw must drive the car down and collect people at Duncan bay mainline or off Forbidden plateau road. Just a thought. See my other routes for ideas on how to do this.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
