We go out through Powick and Bransford and then follow the Leigh valley until just before Longley Green where we turn towards Storridge and take the gruelling climb up to Birchwood where Elgar learnt to ride a bike. As you slog up this long hill you can reflect on the fact that an Edwardian gentleman such as Elgar would have pushed his Royal Sunbeam up this slope! After a distant glimpse of Birchwood we push on to Malvern for coffee.

After that its into your lowest gear for a short but brutal climb up St Ann’s Road and then by way of Foley Terrace and Lower Wyche Road to Craeg Lea (anagram of E Elgar and A for Alice [his wife] and C for Carice [his daughter]) where Elgar moved to in 1899. After that its on to St Wulstan’s Church to see his grave and then an easy ride back home via Welland.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
