An ambitious route looping from the river's edge in Ross-on-Wye.

You can park at Wilton Street Car Park, which is pay and display (£1 per day when written). You will need to cross the road to the start point, you can do this but going through the arches in the bottom corner of the car park (by the skate park).

The start of the route follows along the river, heading upstream. You will pass under the A40 bridge, and head into agricultural land. The path is well marked and deviates from the river edge before reaching Foy Bridge.

You will cross the Wye at Foy Bridge, a magnificent footbridge. From there head straight across agriculture fields, then you'll turn left (down stream) back towards Ross.

Backney makes for a good rest spot on the way back. There is a picnic area, a platform to view the dismantled railway bridge, as well as a short detour to Backney Common. You can roam freely on Backney Common, which is situated in a tight curve of the Wye. It is possible to get down to the water's edge on a shingle beach.

Returning to the route you will move on to slightly busier country lanes, before joining the Herefordshire Trail. Eventually you will reach the A40. The road is very busy and you are strongly advised to only cross at the pedestrian crossing points.

From there cross over Wilton Bridge into Ross and you'll be back at your start point. Nearby is the Hope & Anchor pub, or you could head up to Ross if you have the energy.

This route includes sections on country lanes and crossing busy roads. Take care and follow the Highway Code for pedestrians.

About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
