Backroads To Bendigo 2014
This off highway route is just 20-kms longer than going straight up the highway and is hopefully more interesting. There's lots to see on this back road route to Bendigo. In fact we could call it "the bluestone way to Bendigo". Bluestone pubs, houses, churches and bridges and there are quite rural roads to ride too. It includes a stop at Clarkefield to look at the haunted "Coach and Horses Inn". Then its around the east and north sides of the Macedon Ranges sliding past Hanging Rock. There's a break at Kyneton for lunch. Take a detour to Turpin Falls on a 5-km dirt road north of Kyenton. The rock pools at "The Cascades" in Metcalfe is worth a look. From Sutton Grange you can ride up Mt Alexandra for a fabulous view to the north over the basalt plains. Return is via Lake Eppalock with a visit to the dam wall, Redesdale, Mia Mia and along the Burke and Wills Track to Lancefield.
