Hi Andrew - you can add notes and symbols to your route where you want your checkpoints to be but these would be treated just like any other directions on the Garmin device.  It should show the distance to the next turn (directions/notes) if you are navigatuing a course, but this wouldn't necessarily be a checkpoint you added unless you delete all the other directions and notes.

Is it possible to set checkpoint locations on a route so my Garmin Edge will let me know the distance to the next checkpoint??
