Very many thanks for maintaining a listeneing ear.  It is not altoghether usual these days for organisations to listen to their users (despite what they say) and your response is such a contrast and very refreshing!!!

I fully understand the need for an income steam to keep activity viable.  I still find it amazing that advertising can support so many wonderful things on the web!  In this case, I would have been concerned that the additional advertising (actually obscuring the front page) was so intrusive that it could frighten people off.  I'm sending links to an increasing range of people and several have expressed an interest in using PlotaRoute for their own route planning.  In the end I guess it's a balance between attracting and keeping a large number of users and the income-per-click from the users you have.

Thanks again for being so willing to step back and consider further.

I appreciate your feedback Martyn.  I would love to run the site without any adverts at all but sadly this isn't viable.  However, I'm keen to maintain a good user experience while also keeping the site free for people who would prefer not to pay to use it. I've removed the pop-up adverts from the sign in page for now until we find a better solution for this.

OK John.  Thanks for the information.

Was not sure what you meant by the 'main home page' but confirmed this by experimenting. In case anyone else looks at this post:

• I had a link set to: https://www.plotaroute.com/signin

  This has pop-ups.

• I have changed the link to: https://www.plotaroute.com

  This requires an extra click to Sign In (top-right corner) but, in deed, does not seem to suffer from pop-ups.

As an aside, I don't think the advertising before a user even gets on the site does PlotaRoute any favours.  To date, I've been happy to send links to friends.  The static advertising on the site itself is 'part of life'.  But distracting adverts intruding before you even get started is most unwelcome.  I shall be thinking twice about inflicting this on my friends in the future.

Hi Martyn,

We can only apply the Ad-Free option once you've signed in, otherwise we don't know who is Ad-Free and who isn't.  If you want to avoid any pop-up adverts during signin, I would recommend signing in from the main home page, as this page doesn't have any pop-up adverts.

I recently took out the subscription for Ad-free Membership but I'm now getting a very intrusive and unwelcome advertisment every time I try to login.  It's in the form of a large pop-up window that appears when I'm halfway through typing my password.  It includes bandwidth wasting video, is very distracting and results in mistyped passwords.
