    Hi:

I'm a youth cycling coach and use plotaroute to map out suggested routes (openstreetmap layer for trails) for group rides.  Often i'm suggesting routes to coaches who do not know the trails as well as me.  Is there a way to easily convert a map that I send them, to turn-by-turn audio instructions on their phones so they can hear via an ear phone or phone pouch on a backpack strap?  I prefer audio to visual instructions as we often ride in the rain and need to have phones protected.

    Thanks!

    Hi Lister,

The best thing to do is download the route as a TCX file and then import it into a navigation app.

The following mobile apps have been recommended by other users of the site:

    iPhone - CoRider

    Android - OSMAnd

I believe that both have voice prompts.

    Hope that helps.

    John

Thanks John. I figured out how to download the file.  But can't find CoRider in the App Store, iTunes or with Google. Tried a few different spellings.  Got a link by any chance?

I may have found a nearly as good alternatvie to voice turn-by-turn.  Garmin Edge 500's can read a TCX file, show a route, where you are on it, and warn you of turns.  And plotaroute exports TSX files, as John pointed out.

Here's what it looks like to use:

Here's how to export TSX files from plotaroute to your garmin.

Anyone tried this?  Are the warnings adequate for trail junctions?

Trying tomorrow am, and will post a report.

Corinne, I don't know. I tried it yesterday. I'm a newby to a garmin, but it warned me of every turn 150 m before, when I went off course, stopping and starting.

I was in a data screen (time and distance etc), but instructions popped up over top. I didn't find the screen with the line on the screen and moving triangle representing me.

Why do you need a cue sheet? The garmin tells you when to turn.  (Honest question, haven't used cue sheets).

Hello - I've not been to this site for a while ... but if you want a simple app which will read just the turn info generated by Plotaroute - and which you can amend, improve, supplement - try Track Navigator.  It just navigates you around the track by voice.  Nothing more.  I download the GPX file and use nothing else.

    Hi Colin,

I cannot seem to find Track Navigator in the app store. Is it under a different name?

    Hello Shari

You should look at this post first    https://www.plotaroute.com/posts/2195/D/1

Bike tracker gives feedback on how far / fast / etc

I use miles but if you feedback includes "miles left in route"  it always gives me the wrong number (in kilometres most likely).  Other than that, it's really good.

If you miss a turn it will tell you.  It's best then to turn around and it will tell you to go left or right, which is neat.

(If you don't turn around it will try to get you back on route, but you might get in a tangle.

Track Navigator is more simple and if you miss a turn, you are much more likely to have to get the map out to check.

    The choice is yours ...

There is a new version of Bike Tracker (  v1 1 30  ), released on 2nd January 2019, and that "Distance Remaining" / "miles left in route" bug is now fixed

In Google Play the best way I've found to find Bike Tracker is to search for                    Bike Tracker  PC Ability

It also now offers miles & yards as an alternative to miles & feet.

Also, it now handles routes stored on the phone in folders, for example, routes in different UK counties or in different countries which means that my long list of routes to select from is now much neater
