I can't access trail routes or OS maps on my premium account either.  I need to be able to double check some planned routes.

I still can't, though I thought the problem had been resolved when all three reappeared for a brief period (minutes or, perhaps, hours). There have also been a couple of instances of partial tiling but ultimately, depressing greyness. The phone app also gives the same result.

That really sounds like a glitch with you "Premium" account .... I have been using the OS maps a lot recently, and no issues.

    Hi everyone,

Just an update to let you know that the devs are still investigating.

I have just sent out several messages to those of you who got in touch via email, asking for your help with further tests.

As soon as we have a fix, I'll update this topic again.

    Thanks for your help!

    Julien

Any progress with the blank Cycle (the one I use the most) and OS maps?

    Hi!

Sorry for not updating you sooner. I was away for a bit and meanwhile the devs kept looking into this issue with the help of the community.

We do not have a fix yet, because we still need to pinpoint the origin of this issue.

So far, we think that the issue is location-specific.

Some of you reported that map layers did work using the following workarounds:

    • using Tor Browser
    • using a Chrome extension VPN with hosts in mainland Europe

I have just sent out several emails to some of you to keep gathering information.

Thanks for your help and your patience.

Well, that's interesting...  The mention of VPN just made me try switching my iPad icloud Private Relay back on (I switched it off a while back as I thought, incorrectly, that it was slowing the connection down).  As soon as I switched it on, all the maps were available and downloading correctly.

    Same effect on my iPhone.

    Hi everyone,

I've just read all the replies to the emails I sent out yesterday and the common denominator is Virgin ISP.

After a search online, it seems that similar issues have been raised on several forums by Virgin clients.

Please give the below workaround a try and update this post to tell me if it works.

    All the best,

    Julien

Blank Map Issue with Virgin Media

Virgin Media sometimes enables its Web Safe / Child Safe filter by default. This filter can block our map-tile servers and cause the browser error “ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR.

    1. Sign in to My Virgin Media → Broadband → Web Safe.

    2. Switch Child Safe and Virus Safe to Off, save, and restart your router.

    3. If you’d rather keep Web Safe on, simply change your device’s DNS settings to 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1(Cloudflare).

    4. Reload the page—your map should now display

That's the conclusion I had come to. Windows PC wouldn't load the maps using Virgin broadband, but connecting via the  phone hotspot and mobile network they loaded fine.

    That fix worked for me.

    Hi Trevor,

Thanks for confirming that the workaround worked for you and I hope it will for everyone.

For all VirginMedia clients, you can find more information on their essential security here.

Also, in case the step-by-step I sent before isn't up to date anymore, one of you shared another process I'll paste below.

I have tried getting in contact with VirginMedia, to see if there is something they can do to whitelist our tiles servers, but I haven't been able to.
Customer service doesn't help and all the emails I tried sending came back undelivered.
If you know of a way for me to reach out to them via email, please share this with me.

Meanwhile, the devs will keep looking into this, to see if there is anything we can do on our end, to prevent VirginMedia's security settings from blacklisting our servers.
I'll update the post if they find anything.

Thanks for all of your help in getting to the bottom of this.

    All the best,

    Julien

"This is how I turned "Web Safe" aka "Parental Controls" off.

    Two options:
[1] Going direct to the security settings page.
[2] Accessing the settings via the virginmedia.com home page
    *******************************************************
[1]  Go direct to the security settings page.

    * You may now be asked for your username and password

    * On the next screen, make sure the Parental Controls option is turned off (greyed out)."

This may not be related, but I had a similar issue where my wi-fi would not allow me to see the Google search pages via "www.googleadservices.com". Not a blacklisteing issue from Google's side, but a PC-side "blocked site" issue.

DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN Error in Chrome, both PC and Mobile (when using Wi-Fi, but not data)

Changed DNS settings (see Windows DNS Server.jpg) on PC to 8-8-8-8 & 8-8-4-4 etc, but couldn't do so on mobile (and wasn't comfortable with changing DNS settings just for this).

    Resolution: in my Router settings:

    Security & privacy

    Network controls

    Block and Allow Sites

    Allowed

Added "www.googleadservices.com" in my case. For this problem, try "www.plotaroute.com"

Again, this may not be relevant but may be worth a try.

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for the additional information!

As a matter of fact, someone also got in touch about this issue, which was router-related and not VirginMedia-related.

    The fix was the same:

"I altered the privacy settings, specifically the Broadband setting. I got a result by both changing the overall security (no parental controls) and initially by making Plotaroute an exception."

Hope this helps if some of you are not VirginMedia customers but still have the same issue.

    Hi Julien

I checked my Virgin Media Online Security Settings and both Virus Protection and Parental Controls were greyed out (I enabled Parental Controls and added www.plotaroute.com as an allowed website but it would save the changes).  I then specified 8.8.8.8 as my DNS default and this seams to have cured the problem on my PC, however I am still having the same issues on my mobile and ipad.  I'm not hat technincal so am not sure wether this  a router of VirginMedia issue or how to ensure the changes are applied across all my devices.

    Thanks

    Roger
