Awesome.  Thanks for the advice.  It is working well now.  just road a route today with overlapping legs and using the technique mentioned worked great.  Navigation directions worked perfectly. 

Another trick is to separate overlapping routes is to set the Road Side Switch to Left or Right, and then use the Snap Route to Map tool. This will replot the route with the line shifted to one side of the road.

Update.   Found out that on routes which you have imported from a GPS which can be pretty " wiggly".   If you "snap to route"  first and then do a "Shift Route" it separates the out and back legs nicely and you can then add directions and waypoints easily.   

Thanks Mark and yes I saw the original post right after I posted this.....  I knew I could use the shift route on new routes but was not aware it would work with existing or imported routes.   Reshape route is another great idea.  Thank You!

Scott, you can edit an imported GPX using the Shift Route   tool. Yes, it can be a bit tricky if routes overlap very closely.

And yes, the directions can be hard to place precisely if the number of points is limited. A workaround is to use the Reshape Route tool  to add an anchor point exactly where you want. The direction should be able to snap to that exact point.

I think someone else requested the "place directions based on the distance slider", recently ...... ?

Had problems when trying to add directions to an out and back route.   The directions would "jump" to the wrong point.  Example, trying to put a direction on the outbound leg and it would show up on the return leg.  

I found a work around by using the autoplot feature when generating the route and selecting which side of the road to plot on.  I chose left.  That separates the plot lines and makes it easy to add directions to the correct "leg".   

However when you import a route from a GPS you do not have the option to do that.  However the gps data usually has enough " wiggles" in ot to be able to choose the inbound or outbound leg most of the time.  

I also tried using the route position slider but I found it jumps too much and was hard to get to a correct point.  The fine movement Ctrl + and Ctrl - did not work.   It would be ideal if you could place directions based on the distance slider.
