This report relates to route: 2789990

I have attached photos to 20 directions.  The photo icon appears in each of these and, if I select the direction for editing, the thubmail appears in the edit screen.  However, following the invitation to 'Click here to choose a photo...', just three photos are listed and none of these is the photo shown in the thumbnail.  (Also, the first photo does not diplay - it appears as a black screen.)

For information, this is an edit of route 1202465 which was 'Saved as a New Route' before editing.  The photos seem to be in place in the original route.  I'm wondering if the system is not taking appropriate action to make new copies of photos when a route is 'Saved as a New Route'?

    Hi Martyn,

    Thanks for raising this issue.

I just tried reproducing this and as soon as a route has a photo, I am unable to save it as a new route.
Every time the saving process is unsuccessful.

I'll send this to the dev team to check this out and will get back to you as soon as possible.

    Best regards,
    Julien

    Hi Julien,

Thanks for the update.  I'm just wondering if, in the mean time, it might be possible to 'untangle' route 2789990 for me?  Even if the underlying problem is discoverd and fixed, I still have a route with photos indicated in the directions that cannot be accessed.

    Hi Martyn,

I've looked into this, to see if I could untagle the situation, but I haven't found an easy fix on my end.
If you still have the photos of the original 1202465 route, you could upload them to the 2789990 route, but I understand that this is not an ideal solution.

I'll also bring this up with the dev team.

    Best regards,
    Julien

    Hi Julien,

I have the photos and I would have tried your suggestion but I'm concerned about the exisitng photo links in the directions.  I'm not sure I can delete them or replace them with new photos.  I don't want to inadvertantly make the whole route inaccessible.

    Hi Martyn,

I have just done some extended testing and the conclusion seems to be, that a photo is only available on one route and cannot be saved or copied to another route, but the link remains.

Here are some of the tests I did:

Created a route, uploaded six photos, added those photos to six directions and saved it as the original route.

Went to edit, saved the route as new route.
This route now shows that there is one photo (just displays a black screen) and shows that six directions have a photo (which can't be accessed).
However, if I print a PDF of that route, all the photos of the original route do show for the directions they are attached to.

From the original route's actions, I clicked on "Edit copy of this route".
This route now shows no photos, but does still show that six directions have a photo (which can't be accessed either).
If I print the PDF, I get the same result: the photos for the directions that have one are displayed.

Maybe this isn't so much a bug, as a way to prevent copying of photos of other users.
What does bother me however, is that on saving a route with photos as new route, the black screen photo appears, which isn't the case when editing a copy of the route.

Now I also did another test, regarding the untangling of your route:
After I created the original route and saved it as new route, I went to edit, photos, uploaded the same six photos from the original route (deleted the black screen photo).
Went to directions, clicked on the first with a photo, clicked on the thumbnail of the original photo, chose the same photo from the ones I uploaded again, did the same with all directions, saved.
Result: two identical routes, with the same photos. From what I see, this did not alter anything on the original route and hasn't caused any problems on the new route.

Uploading photos again might be the only solution to having them displayed properly on several routes.

I'll bring all this up with the devs and see what is normal and what should or could be improved.

    Cheers,
    Julien

    Hi Julien,

I've just followed your guideleines regarding route 2789990.  (This is the route I saved as a new route but the photos did not copy across.)

    • I deleted the spurious blank photo
    • I uploaded the missing photos once more
    • I edited each direction that should have a photo, re-selecting the appropriate, newly uploaded photo.

The result looks fine at first glance in Edit mode.  However:

    • When viewing the route, it is normal functionality to click a camera icon to see the assoicated photo.  This does not work for the photos I've just re-added.  (It does, however, work for the last two photos. I added these as new photos just after saving as a new route.)
    • When producing a PDF, all of the added photos are now duplicated at the end of the output as well as being shown alongside the appropriate direction .  Normally you select whether photos are to appear 'in line' (which is what I had set) or as a 'Page' at the end. You don't normally get both.  (I've noted previously that any photos not linked to directions do get appended to the PDF but never all of them.)

While I can understand that it may be appropriate not to copy over photos when saving someone elses route as a new route (but there should be a warning to the user about this), the expection when copying one's own routes would be that the photos come too.

What I'm seeing at the moment cannot be intended behaviour.

    Hello Julien,

I've just had ocassion to print route 2789990 once more and discovered that the issues reported back in March of this year still remain.  I've spent the best part of a year building up a series of walking routes covering 70 miles or more (see www.plotaroute.com/club/h2htrail).  The routes have all been plotted, test walked, and helpful photos have been added.  I'm now moving towards promoting the walks to a wider audience but the very first route does not print correctly... a poor impression of Plotaroute, Visorando, and my routes.

I can understand a reluctance to devlop new feactures in Plotaroute but fixing bugs is surely a must and a priority.  Visorando in its current state of devolopment cannot match the capabilies of Plotaroute and is not capable of the detail I have been able to deliver through Plotaroute.

It's been 7 months.  Please, please get the bugs fixed.  There's not even a work around bar composing the route all over again from scratch.  :-(

    Martyn,

I just looked at your first route on the excellent Club page you have created (well done, it looks excellent and the use of the guiding white lines on the photos makes things much clearer!). I printed the route to PDF and all looks impressive, albeit that the photos are repeated at the end (which I take it is one of your issues).

I can't help, of course, but wanted to say what a great job you have done!

    Mark
