After I traced / "plotted" / my route, and went to save it, an error message came up.  Route was too big to save.  Well, 638 k is rather long, BUT if there was a message that would appear saying "you're nearing capacity, save what you've got and start a second segment" I could have taken some action.

Wow, that is a long route!  Thanks for the feedback though, we'll look at adding a warning messsge as you suggest.

So here is some more on how long of a route:

I just successfully saved a 638 km route.  To be fair, I only selected about 4 points and let the system find the route, but there are probably as many GPS points for it to record (roads have probably more curves on th 638 km one).

So, what is the limit?  what might have caused the first one to choke on its size?  Does micro-selecting just where I want to turn make the file bigger?  If I select fewer points which still get me the same route (zoomed out more), will that yield a smaller file?

The maximum data size limit is something that we will probably be reviewing and changing over time.  The limit is based on the storage size of the data (including all the notes/directions that have been added) not on the length of the route, so a more complex route will hit the limit sooner than a less complex one.  To reduce the risk of this you can turn off "Automatically Add Directions" in the Settings if you do not need the route directions (or delete the directions before you save the route).  We will look at adding a warning message as suggested though, so that very long routes can be saved in manageable sections.

Audax routes can be 1200km or more. They will often need notes on facilities available at locations enroute as well as directions.

If I were to use plotaroute as my tool of choice I would want to be able to manage all my routes here.

Thanks for the feedback Duncan.  We've increased the size limit by five-fold now, so hopefully this should be plenty for your needs.  Let us know if you have any problems though.
