That's brilliant, thank you. Glad I could help.

We think we've found the problem and have implemented a fix (the screen recording really helped). It was an obscure bug connected with the very large size of your routes. Hopefully it should be OK now.

Thanks Martin - received at this end. We'll look into it.

I have a screen recording showing the problem arising. I don't want to post a public URL to it here. What's the best way to share it with the Plotaroute team privately?

A screen recording would be very helpful - thanks.

How very strange. I'm definitely using "Edit in route planner".

As I'm currently travelling it's difficult to do more than I have (e.g. I have no WiFi right now!). When I'm home again, I'll see if I can recreate the issue and record my PC screen as I do so. That way you can see exactly what I'm doing.... and perhaps spot my mistake :-)

    All the best

Sorry, we still can't recreate this issue, even following the steps below. We created copies of your routes "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V5" and also "Euro2022 - León To Cistierna". We then edited the first one, used Combine Routes to append the second one onto the first, used Reduce Points  and then saved it. It all worked fine.

You're not selecting "Edit copy of this route" in step 2 below are you instead of "Edit in route planner"? This would create a fresh copy of the route you are editing, with a new route ID.

Thanks for the additional information, that's very helpful - we'll investigate further.

p.s. I've just renamed the newly created route "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V6" so I can distinguish it from the original. I will change my collection to include V6 rather than V5.

Hi, this has happened a couple more times. Collections are a red herring. The issue is that after using Reduce Points and saving the route being edited, I end up with a new copy of the route despite clicking Save and not Save As New Route. The collection references the original copy and therefore does not show the most recent change since this is in a new route that automagically gets created.

I paid special attention this last time and both the original route I was editing and the new copy that materialised are still in my routes list (they're private but I assume the dev team can see them). Here's what I did:

    1. Create a new route using the "Upload a Route" function and a gpx file exported from Strava.

    2. Edit route named "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V5". Route number/ID is 2006841.

    3. Use the Combine function to append the route created in step 1 to "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V5".

    4. Note that the "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V5" route now has more than 50,000 points and so use Reduce Points to reduce the number of points.

    5. Save the route and then select Manage Routes to go to the list of My Routes.

    6. Notice that there are now two routes listed with the same name, "Euro2022 - Continental Europe Thus Far V5". Hover the pointer and note that the one at the top of the list which has a Modified value of "Just Now" has route number 2012304. A few rows down, the other route with this name has the original number of 2006841.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for trying. I was definitely not clicking Save As New Route. I've not had the same problem since posting, however. It was quite consistent at the time I posted and had happened several times. If it happens again I'll see if I can nail the steps to recreate and will post again.

We can't seem to be able to reproduce this problem - using the Reduce Points feature when editing an existing route doesn't result in a new copy of the route for us. Are you sure you didn't click on the SAVE AS NEW ROUTE button by mistake?  If you let us know which route you are editing we can try it here.

I think I may know what is happening. My "progress" route is large and each time I save, I am asked to use Reduce Points first. I do this and then save successfully. It looks like Plotaroute saves the route with its reduced route as a new route (i.e. with a new ID) and leaves the original as a separate route in My Routes. The Collection is associated with the original version of the route, which has not changed.

Why does using Reduce Points and then saving result in a new copy of the route rather than overwriting the one being editted?

    Hi

I have a collection which contains two routes (call the second of these the "progress" route). Each time I ride my bike on my current trip, I upload the recorded GPX to Plotaroute to create a new route (call it "today's route"). I then append "today's route" to the "progress" route and save it. This is successful and I see the change reflected in the "progress" route.

When I view the Collection of which "progress" is a member however, the latest change is not evident. I have to delete the collection and recreate it for the latest to be visible at Collection level.

This does seem like a bug to me.

You can see the way I've been using this approach to generate a "progress so far" map/route on my blog here:

    Regards

    Martin
