Valleys SK traverses the Tararua Forest park from Putara (was called Shormann's )to Kaitoke.

This the less strenuous of the SK routes, but does involve untracked wilderness river travel and some route finding. A stunning route linking the main river valleys on the Wairarapa side of the range and saddles in between.

A glorious summer route, coldies in the Winter.

Do your research on route finding down the Ruamahanga River and through to Cow Creek Hut; and Cone Saddle - often tackled in the dark.

A rough rule of thumb is that the Ruamahanga River stage height should be below 400mm at Mt. Bruce bridge. Even at this height multiple river crossings will be needed and possibly some swimming. Research the terrace routes on the true right of this section.

(NB: the GPX file here was reduced in size to allow upload under a free account. Some unintentional route smoothing may have resulted.

Also note the exit here from Ruamahanga River at Cleft Creek (12km) is straight up Cleft Creek. Most people exit up the bank due south of the river bend to find the track.)

    CALCULATE CALORIES

    About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
