TotY 2024 #2 Big Leaf Maple (Acer macrophyllum) Nomination in Bear Creek Nature Park , 49.86725, -125.16628

The broad spreading canopy of this particular tree begins high up with spreading branches almost equal in diameter to the main trunk. An interesting specimen that is uncommon among big leaf maples as it has maintained a modified central leader while also producing a giant broad crown. Estimated height of 30.3m and circumference of 4.37m
Bear Creek Nature Park: walk from parking lot follow the main road for 1km until Fish Information Sign indicates end/start of Chinook trail. Follow trail for about 50m to crossroads with Coho trail leading left/north and trail sign. Looking north you will see the Big Leaf Maple 10m besides Coho Trail. Left side of trail is a young planted spruce meadow, Maple is standing within Hemlocks and besides a White Spruce.
It is worthwhile to continue your walk, the trails are meandering trough forest, along Oyster river and hatchery channels.

Bear Creek Nature Park contains approximately 1,350 metres of frontage along the Oyster River, four kilometres from its confluence with Georgia Strait. Bear Creek Nature Park protects a portion of floodplain and wetland along the Oyster River that provides important habitat for fish and wildlife. The upland second-growth forest buffers the floodplain/wetland and the river.

    CALCULATE CALORIES

    About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
