Es geht zunächst auf dem Solztalradweg (ehem. Bahnstrecke) abseits jeder Straße fast bis nach Malkomes. Kurz vor diesem Dorf zweigt nach links der Radweg R7 in Richtung Friedewald ab. Dieser Abschnitt bis nach Friedewald ist der längste und steilste Anstieg der Strecke.
(Man könnte hier auch auf dem Solztalradweg (Bahnradweg Hessen) bleiben und über Schenklengsfeld an Friedewald vorbei fahren und so die Steigung umgehen.)
In Friedewald angekommen, kann man sich das Wasserschloss ansehen und eine kleine Pause einlegen - der höchste Punkt ist erreicht.
Von Friedewald geht es weiter auf dem Radweg R7 bergab bis nach Röhrigshof, wo der Ulsterradweg nach rechts abzweigt. Das Ulstertal besticht durch einen weitgehend natürlichen Flusslauf zwischen Feldern und dem Waldrand. Der Radweg verläuft teils auf schmalen Wegen abseits der Straße. Am Flusslauf der Ulster entlang und teils auf der ehem. Bahntrasse geht es so nun flussaufwärts bis nach Wenigentaft.
In Wenigentaft zweigt man vom Ulsterradweg - der am Ort vorbei führt - ab, um am anderen Ende des Dorfes auf den Kegelspielradweg zu treffen. Dieser verläuft komplett auf einer ehemaligen Bahntrasse. Gleich zu Beginn muss ein kurzer steiler Anstieg bewältigt werden, der auf eine Brücke und damit das Niveau der Bahntrasse führt. Dann geht es sanft mal steigend, mal absteigend weitgehend über offenes Feld, hier und da mit schattenspendenden Sträuchern.
Der Kegelspielradweg bietet dabei immer wieder wundervolle Ausblicke auf die namensgebenden kegelförmigen Hügel der ersten Rhönausläufer.
