Monday 7th June. Weather warm 17C, dry, sunny with occasional cloud. Like the previous two days quiet with only the occasional other walkers (and two mountain bikers).

Took the 'Ratty' (train) from Dalgarth (Boot) to Ravenglass with a view to a straightforward 8 mile walk back (estimated time 4hrs). All was straight forward until we reached 'Ross Camp' where we took a right hand fork (rather than the left hand fork which was the correct path which would have kept us on high ground). Deceived into thinking we were on the correct route by a public gate in the wall (which we took to be the wall we had to follow down to Muncaster Head). In fact we were following ill defined sheep paths through ferns which led into an area of peat bog. After a massive humour failure (by Simon) we struggled uphill and traversed similar terrain parallel to the slope until we reached a stream. We followed this (drier) path downhill through woodland and reached a tarmac forestry road (the 'Esk' trail.) After a brief misdirection turning right(back towards Ravenglass) a quick U turn took us to Muncaster Head farm where we picked up the original path. The rest of the walk was uneventful crossing the stepping stones at the church. The unintentional diversion probably cost us 30 mins journey time. If we'd used the new OS map we would probably have taken the right route!

    CALCULATE CALORIES

    About the Calorie Calculator

Our Calorie Calculator estimates how many Calories you will burn using Metabolic Equivalent (MET) values from Compendium of Physical Activities. The Compendium idenitifes the relative energy cost of undertaking various activities compared with doing nothing. We then combine this with your weight and the estimated duration of the activity, taking into account the length of the route and the hills involved, to estimate the total Calories burned.

When selecting an Activity setting, select the speed you would normally travel at on flat ground.

Please remember, the estimated number of Calories is just a guide and the actual number of Calories burned may vary depending on other factors such as weather and terrain.
